In a coordinated effort with Romanian police and Europol, Spain’s National Police have dismantled a criminal group known for robbing unsuspecting victims through deceptive hugs. Over 20 individuals connected to the gang have been taken into custody.
Authorities revealed that the thieves approached their targets in a seemingly affectionate manner, using a hug as a distraction to stealthily steal valuables. This method was especially effective in catching victims off guard.
The group primarily operated near banks, ATMs, and tourist hotspots. Police made 13 arrests in Murcia and another eight in Madrid. During the operation, 16 property searches were conducted, uncovering links to 46 theft-related offenses.
Though headquartered in Madrid, the gang’s criminal activities spanned across various regions in Spain. Investigators recovered stolen cash, luxury cars, and jewelry, and also froze 56 bank accounts tied to the suspects.
One individual played a key logistical role by traveling swiftly from Madrid to collect stolen items from different locations, which were then shipped to Romania through courier services.
